Dark red (or kuro-beni) was a highly-favored base color for the inner lining of the jinashi kosode, a heavily patterned kimono, during Japan's early Edo period. Made by applying black dye over a base of red, this distinctive hue peaks from the edges of the garment, giving a beautiful contrast against gorgeous fabric designs that were usually treated as required formal wear among women of the era.
This appearance of bright red beneath an intricate garment inspired the Sailor King of Pen Tamenuri Kuro-beni (Dark Red). Featuring the lacquer technique that adds a visual experience similar to looking into the bottom of a clear pool, this pen allows you to see both red and black, even as they blend into one rich color. Only 120 pieces of this pen have ever been made and all have been masterfully handcrafted by tamenuri artist Kosyu Nishihara.
We have for sale a brand new, limited-edition Sailor King of Pen Tamenuri Kuro-beni fountain pen with a 21-karat gold nib in M. It comes complete with its box, papers, and other inclusions.
