During Japan’s early Edo period, specifically during the Genna and Kan'ei eras, dark red was usually used as the base color of jinashi kosode, one of the many layers of garments worn by aristocrats in court. The color was achieved by dyeing black over red.
The same idea was behind the Sailor King of Pen Kuro-beni (Dark Red) Tamenuri. Featuring the lacquer technique that adds a visual experience similar to looking into the bottom of a clear pool, this pen allows you to see both red and black, even as they blend into one rich color. Only 120 pieces of this pen have ever been made and all have been masterfully handcrafted by tamenuri artist Kosyu Nishihara.
We have for sale a limited-edition Sailor King of Pen Tamenuri Kuro-beni fountain pen (new old stock) installed with a bi-color 21-karat gold nib in M. It comes complete with its box and papers.
