Leonardo da Vinci supposedly said that “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”, and it has never been truer than in describing the Namiki Yukari Royale Urushi Vermillion. It was made by artisan collective Kokkokai using the roiro urushi technique, which requires the lacquer’s surface to be wet sanded using charcoal finishing. Suruga charcoal that comes from the Japanese tungoil tree is required for this, and there is no substitute for it. The result is a perfectly smooth surface with a glossy, mirror-like shine.
