f you’re a gamer and a fan of Fate/Grand Order, you may be familiar with the character Taira no Kagekiyo. Did you know, however, that this vengeful ghost is actually a historical figure?
Taira no Kagekiyo was a warrior adopted by the Taira clan. He had a huge role in putting the Emperor Go-Shirakawa on the throne (reigning from 1155-1158), and fought against the Minamonto clan during the Genpei War (1180). He is famously depicted in the fictional epic Heike Monogatari (The Tale of Heike) and has been the subject of woodblock prints.
His memory lives on in many modern mediums, one of which is on the Namiki Ukiyo-e Taira no Kagekiyo fountain pen. Created by the artists of Kokkokai, it uses hira maki-e to showcase his fearsome face and intricate armor.
