Dragons are mythical creatures considered to be powerful, intelligent, and long-lived. As bearers of good fortune, dragon dances are held in city squares and businesses at the beginning of the new lunar year to usher in prosperity and happiness.
Dragons are revered in Japan. They are prominent in Shinto and are believed to reside in bodies of water near temples, which are often named after them. Dragons are also usually depicted in paintings of Mount Fuji, a Japanese symbol of purity and eternity. According to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, such depictions are an act of respect to the mountain deity and a symbol of felicity.
In honor of Hokusai’s woodblock print “Toryu no Fuji” (Fuji with Ascending Dragon), Namiki released “Mt.
