The rooster is an important animal in Shinto. Legend has it that when the sun goddess Amaterasu hid in a cave and plunged the world into darkness, it was the crowing of the rooster and the flapping of its wings that enticed her to come out and bring light back. To this day, the rooster is considered a sacred messenger of Amaterasu, and some Shinto shrines allow numbers of them to roam freely in temples.
The Namiki Chinkin Yukari Royale Rooster fountain pen celebrates the lore behind the bird that wakes the world up every morning. It features chinkin or gold inlay, a lacquering technique that requires carefully carving the design before inlaying the grooves with gold. This painstaking artform creates gorgeous detail, as seen on the pen’s two roosters and their intricate plummages created by the artisan Yasuji.
