Autumn in Japan is considered a time for reflection and appreciation of abundance in light of mono no aware, or beautiful impermanence. There are many festivals during this season (aki matsuri), many of which give thanks to deities for a good harvest. Tsukimi, or moon-viewing festivals, are celebrated mid-autumn, where families and friends gather under golden red leaves to appreciate the harvest moon.
Momiji, or maple leaves, which are known for their bright, fiery hues during this season, are the main theme of the Namiki Chinkin Autumn Leaves fountain pen. It features chinkin or gold inlay, a lacquering technique that requires carefully carving the design before inlaying the grooves with gold, resulting in gorgeously intricate and detailed images. This is seen in each maple leaf etched on black lacquer that leads the eyes towards a carp near the bottom of the barrel—a symbol of luck and longevity. Created by the artisan Yasuji, it carries a No. 10, 18-karat gold nib.
