Marilyn Monroe may have been the beautiful blond bombshell from the 1940s, but her life was unfortunately tragic behind the limelight. Born Norma Jeane Mortenson, her mother battled mental issues that made her unable to properly raise a child. She was allegedly abused by other family members and was later on sent to an orphanage. When she grew older, acting became her escape from the grimness of the world. She later became a sex symbol, with some directors saying she was difficult to work with as she wanted to control her own career and refused several pin-up roles. The industry would only realize decades after her death that it was misogyny that built many false narratives about her. (Actor and director Laurence Olivier, who famously upset Monroe for saying, “All you have to do is be sexy,” admitted that she was a victim of sensation.) 

In her last few years, she struggled on set. A string of failed relationships and pregnancies led to a physical and mental decline. Marilyn Monroe passed away in August of 1962, but she continues to be both a symbol of strength and fragility, especially for women who resonate with her story.
