Austrian conductor Herbert von Karajan started out as a child piano prodigy, which led him to study music at the prestigious Mozarteum University Salzburg. He debuted as a professional conductor in 1929 at 21, and was offered a conducting position later that year. While he became known as one of the most gifted conductors of the era, his connection to the Nazi party drew sharp criticism among his peers and fellow Austrians and was barred from performing in several cities. He was exonerated by an Allied tribunal after WWII.
Karajan later became a chief conductor at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, and led world-renowned orchestras including the Orchestre de Paris and the Vienna State Opera. He passed away in July 1989, three short months after leaving his post as Berlin Philharmonic’s principal conductor.
The life of this complicated, controversial, yet consumate musician is remembered through the Montblanc Donation Pen Herbert von Karajan. Made from precious resin, it features a cap encircled with a keyboard, representing his earlier, more innocent years as a brilliant pianist. It sports a baton-inspired clip and an 18K gold nib with a rhodium finish.
