Frequently depicted together in art, the crane and the turtle are symbols of longevity, good fortune, and prosperity in Japanese culture. This bond draws from folklore, where the turtle saves the crane from drowning, and years later, the crane returns the favor by saving the turtle from drought. They are often depicted in decorations and merchandise seen in celebrations such as New Year’s Day and Respect for the Aged Day in the hopes of ushering in long life and continuous happiness.
These two creatures are featured on the Namiki Nippon Art Turtle and Crane as interpreted by artist collective Kokkosai, which we have on sale today. Elegantly executed using Hira Maki-e, this brand new fountain pen has a No. 5, 14-karat gold nib in F.
