In Japanese culture, the crane (tsuru) and the turtle (kame) symbolize good tidings, longevity, and prosperity. They are often depicted in art, textiles, and folklore—most famously in the fable about how the turtle once saved the crane from drowning, only to be repaid years later when the grateful crane rescued the turtle from a drought.
The crane and the turtle are revered symbols seen during celebrations, such as New Year’s Day and Respect for the Aged Day (Keirō no Hi). They take center stage in this Namiki Nippon Art Crane and Turtle fountain pen, crafted using the hira maki-e (flat maki-e) technique by Kokkokai, a group of artisans that has worked on Namiki pens since 1931.
We have a new-old-stock Namiki Nippon Art Crane and Turtle fountain pen with a 14K gold nib (M) for sale. This version carries a heavier brass cap. It comes with its complete set that includes a box, papers, and other inserts.
