Karl Der Grosse Charlemagne, who is more commonly known as “Charlemagne”, was King of the Franks, King of the Lombards, and later on Emperor of the Carolingian Empire, which encompassed present-day France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and parts of Spain and Austria.
While his rule had conflicts, it was generally known to have been the start of Europe’s unification. Moreover, it also began the Carolingian Renaissance, which was a period of intellectual revival inspired by the Romans and the Greeks. The era produced architecture, art, music, and the theory of law. Charlemagne ordered schools to be built to improve literacy, with the goal of training people capable of properly reading and writing in Latin who would become functioning members of society.
Inspired by Charlemagne’s contributions to Europe, Montblanc released the Patron of Art Karl Der Grosse Hommage à Charlemagne in 2000. Most of the barrel and the cap are made of faceted sterling silver that gently twists upon itself. The gold-plated trims are reminiscent of the gilded bronze doors of the emperor’s Palatine Chapel in Aachen, and the clip is adorned with a synthetic onyx cabochon. The bi-color rhodium-plated, 18-karat gold nib is engraved with a medieval pattern that frames Charlemagne’s monogram.
