Known as “The Greatest”, Muhammad Ali was more than a champion heavyweight boxer. He was a philantropist and an activist, a popular trash talker and a spoken word performer. Out of his 61 fights in his career, he only lost 5. One of his most famous fights, “Thrilla in Manila”, happened in Araneta Coliseum in 1975, where he decisively beat former champion Joe Frazier III in their third and final professional match. He also famously refused to be drafted into the military to be assigned to Vietnam, saying that the war was unethical and against his religion. Even after he retired from boxing, he continued being a champion for civil rights. 

In honor of The Greatest, Montblanc released the Homage to Muhammad Ali in 2023 as part of their Great Characters collection. The special edition fountain pen is made from precious black resin. The cap is shaped like a boxing bag and features a butterfly engraving as a nod to one of Ali’s most famous quotes, “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” The barrel is inspired by hand wraps, with its golden end engraved with four lines representing boxing ropes and an inscription remembering his 1960 Olympic win. The “1” on the Montblanc emblem doesn’t only symbolize his first title, but also his position as one of the best—if not the best boxer in the world.
