Herbert von Karajan was an Austrian conductor and a very controversial character. Considered to be a child prodigy, he played the piano with such mastery that he was brought to study at the Mozarteum University Salzburg.
While he grew up to be one of the most gifted conductors of his time, his life was not without issue. It was said that in an effort to preserve his musical career, he joined the Nazi party, later becoming Germany’s youngest general music director.
His actions were criticized by many of his contemporaries and fellow Austrians. Karajan generally kept mum about his decisions, and while no one truly knew his real reasons, these later rendered him unable to play in a number of cities. Nevertheless, he was named the principal conductor for life of the Berlin Philharmonic and the artistic director of the Vienna State Opera until his death.
This conflicted and controversial figure was encapsulated in the Montblanc Donation Pen Herbert von Karajan (2004). Made from precious resin, it features a cap encircled with a keyboard, representing his earlier, more innocent years as a brilliant pianist. It sports a baton-inspired clip and an 18-karat gold nib with a rhodium finish.
We have for sale a new-old-stock Montblanc Donation Pen Herbert von Karajan fountain pen with an M nib. It comes complete with its box, papers, and other inclusions.
