Dantrio is a California-based company founded by Bernard and Dani Lyn, both of whom have a deep appreciation for Japanese culture. While they started making fountain pens in 1974, the recent years have found their creations focusing on urushi and maki-e techniques, creating a strong connection to Japanese aesthetics.
One of their creations, the Tame-nuri in Green on Junikaku, is an elegant, oversized pen featuring a nuanced sea-green color. Tame-nuri pertains to the clear coat of urushi applied to allow one to appreciate different lacquer layers that include the base shita-nuri (which is sabi or urushi mixed with polishing powders), naka-nuri (interim layer), and uwa-nuri (finishing). To achieve the tame-nuri effect, high-quality translucent urushi called suke-urushi is used to finish the pen.
We have for sale today a pre-owned Danitrio Tame-nuri in Green on Junikaku. This eyedropper pen features an 18k gold stub nib. It is an older model and in great quality, save for a small dot from the urushi curing process. It’s a complete set that comes with its aged box and sleeve.
