Maki-e, an art form that features sprinkled powdered precious metals on lacquered surfaces, encompasses many techniques—but the Sailor Kin Rei Maki-e Nami ni Fuji (Mt. Fuji and Waves) employs an exceptionally demanding one. The process entails painting and drying the entire length of the pen multiple times, which may take anywhere from six to eight months. After this, gold leaves from Kanazawa, measuring only 0.005 mm., are carefully applied. The tiniest mistake can set back months of work, and even destroy the piece.
This pen is part of the Sailor Kin Rei Maki-e Special Edition line, which features four other designs: Kabuki, Oiran (Courtesan), and Mure Matsu ni Tsuru (Crane and Pine). For sale today is the eye-catching, new-old-stock Sailor Kin Rei Maki-e Nami ni Fuji with an H-M nib. It comes complete with its outer box, inner box, and ink bottle.
