The monkey, which is the ninth of 12 animals in the Chinese and Japanese zodiac, represents intelligence and adaptability. Those born during its year are said to be charming and clever, albeit slightly naughty. The monkey has deep ties in Japanese culture as they’re said to be messengers of mountain gods.
This quick-witted creature is beautifully interpreted on the Namiki Yukari Zodiac Collection Monkey, which features the work of Masaru Hayashi, who is part of the Kokkokai artisan collective. Hayashi used taka maki-e (raised lacquer) and added intricate details in gold dust backdropped in black and finished with urushi.
We have for sale a pre-owned Namiki Yukari Zodiac Collection Monkey signed by Masaru Hayashi with a gold nib in F.
Length capped: 14.1 cm.
