Togidashi Hira Maki-e (Burnished Flat Maki-e) is a combination of two techniques. Togidashi Maki-e is used to create the background and other scene elements by painting the design in lacquer, sprinkling it with gold or silver dust, and then applying another coat of lacquer to fix the powder. Hira Maki-e is then used for the main design, following basic maki-e steps but with the application of additional lacquer layers requiring several drying periods before being burnished.
Togidashi Hira Maki-e is used on the Pilot Togidashi Hira Maki-e Sakura, one of six discontinued designs featuring traditional Japanese designs. It features cherry blossoms against a black, lacquered background, as if falling from branches at night. This cartridge/converter pen has gold trims and a 14-karat gold nib.
We have for sale a pre-owned Pilot Togidashi Hira Maki-e Sakura fountain pen with an M nib. It comes complete with its box, papers, and other inclusions.
