From heavy religious inclinations during the Middle Ages, art focused more on humanism, naturalism, and realism during the Renaissance. Chiaroscuro, which is a technique that uses strong contrasts between light and dark, became popular among Italian artists. Leonardo da Vinci was a master of this technique, seen especially in his work “The Virgin of the Rocks”. Baroque artist Caravaggio was famous for using chiaroscuro, and was greatly influenced by the works of his predecessors.
This play of light and shadow inspired the Pelikan M1000 Renaissance Brown released in 2024, the spiritual successor of the M800 Renaissance Brown. Aside from the size, there are slight trim differences between the pens—the M800 has two rings on the piston knob and the cap, while the newer M1000 sports single rings. If you enjoy hefty pens, then the M1000 is your choice.
