Did you know that F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” was a commercial failure when it was first released? While it had good reviews from critics, it failed to reach a wider audience, selling less than 23,000 copies in its first year. In fact, despite his initial career success, Fitzgerald’s life was far from the glitz and glamour he would write about—his wife had to be institutionalized for schizophrenia, he battled alcohol addiction, and his works lost popularity during the Great Depression. His last royalty for The Great Gatsby was for only $13.13, which he received just before he died of a heart attack in 1940 at only 44 years old.

It was only after World War II that The Great Gatsby and its author received much-deserved recognition, and by the 1960, the book had become part of high school and college curricula. Today, it is known as the “Great American Novel”, and continues to be the inspiration for many movies, television series, musicals, and even video games.

As a well-deserved homage to a brilliant yet tragic author, Montblanc released the Writers Edition F. Scott Fitzgerald fountain pen in 2002. Inspired by the lively buzzle of the jazz age, it features pearlescent-white resin that reflects the affluence of the era, contrasted by a black section, end, and cap adorned with platinum-plated stripes. Its clip resembles a dapper tie, and the pen is crowned with a two-tone, 18-karat gold nib with art deco engravings.
