Tea in Japan is much more than a drink. Cha-no-yu, or the Japanese tea ceremony, developed into a highly ritualized art during the sixteenth century, with tea master Sen no Rikyū becoming one of its most influential figures. At the center of the ceremony is matcha: finely powdered green tea traditionally prepared in a bowl with hot water and a bamboo whisk called a chasen. Depending on the preparation, it can be served as koicha, a rich and thick tea, or usucha, a lighter tea whisked to a delicate froth.
Sailor brings this centuries-old tradition to the fifth edition of its Teatime Around the World series, a collection inspired not simply by different teas, but by the utensils, sweets, rituals, and culture that surround them. Released in September 2025 and limited to only 1,000 pieces, the Matcha edition takes its palette directly from the contrasting colors of koicha and usucha.
Deep and lighter shades of matcha green are paired with black accents and warm Gold IP-finished details, transforming Sailor’s familiar flat-topped Professional Gear silhouette into a tribute to the Japanese tea room. The result feels appropriately restrained yet distinctive, reflecting the quiet attention to detail that defines cha-no-yu. Completing the pen is Sailor’s large 21-karat gold nib, bringing one of the brand’s signature writing features to this distinctly Japanese edition.
