Sei Shonagon (966-1017) was a lady who served Empress Consort Fujiwara no Teishi, who wrote short essays to express things she couldn’t say while she was at court. These slices of life were collated in what is now known as “The Pillow Book”, an early example of zuihitsu (“follow the brush”), or random thoughts on paper.
In one of her entries, she describes the beauty of the summer night: “In summer the nights–not only when the moon shines, but on dark nights too, as the fireflies flit to and fro, and even when it rains, how beautiful it is!” This became the inspiration for the Sailor Professional Gear Midnight Sky fountain pen. Made from resin, its color has been carefully created to match the author’s description of a pleasant evening more than a thousand years ago.
