The owl, or “fukuro,” is one of the most beloved animals in Japan, as it is considered lucky. Its reputation went through an interesting transition: from being hailed as a blessed guardian of fields, to a feared demon of the night, to finally a symbol of health and good fortune, the owl has become a common subject in traditional art, often seen in woodblock prints and interpreted as “netsuke” or portable sculptures.
This nocturnal raptor is featured on the Sailor King of Pen Chinkin Owl. This cartridge/converter fountain pen has an ebonite base. It is designed by renowned artist Etsuko Tsurata, who used the Chinkin technique, where gold powder or leaf is placed in the crevices of a hand-etched design and sealed with lacquer. It comes with a two-tone, 21-karat gold nib. Only 28 pieces were made available worldwide.
We have for sale a very rare Sailor King of Pen Chinkin Owl fountain pen, complete with its maki-e-designed and lacquered gift box, ink bottle, cartridge, converter, pen pouch, and other certificates and inserts.
