Snakes are prominent in Japanese folklore, both as symbols of auspiciousness and malevolence. Many shrines are dedicated to them as they are considered protectors of the land, but are also sometimes depicted as a ravager, as in the case of the Yamata no Orochi (Eight-Headed Serpent).
The cobra is a snake not endemic to Japan, but has been incorporated into mythology through Buddhism. As part of Sailor’s Dobutsu to Gekkou (Animals in the Moonlight) collection, the cobra is featured on the limited-edition King of Pen Maki-e fountain pen. With an ebonite base, the Cobra to Gekkou is the fifth model by Maki-e master Ikki Moroike, beautifully hand-painted to mimic the serpent’s silent movement at night. Each of the 50 units released is signed and has a unique serial number.
We have for sale a brand-new Sailor King of Pen Animals in the Moonlight Limited Edition Cobra with a two-tone, 21-karat gold rhodium-plated gold nib in M. It comes complete with its special gift box, papers, and other inclusions.
