Byakudan-nuri is an urushi technique that uses very fine silver or gold leaf (often silver) painted on with layers of highly transparent urushi to achieve an almost ethereal illusion of depth. Byakudan-nuri takes its name from Byakudan incense wood (sandalwood), which has a rich, brown-red color. Byakudan-nuri changes color over time and only gets richer with age.

The Platinum Izumo Yakumonuri Byakudan features this technique to depict the Yakumo (“eight rising clouds”) motif of the Izumo Taishi’s ceiling. It features an ebonite base with several layers of urushi and is finished with silver outlines. It carries an 18-karat gold nib.

The Platinum Izumo line is a homage to Izumo, a storied city that played a role in Japan’s creation, and the Izumo Taisha, one of the country’s oldest and most sacred shrines where gods are said to meet.
