Long before modern acrylics became common in penmaking, celluloid was prized for something ordinary resin struggles to imitate: extraordinary depth, vivid color, and patterns that seem to shift beneath the surface. Platinum continues to work with this traditional material through a remarkably involved process, forming celluloid from sheets, softening and shaping the material, allowing components to dry naturally for extended periods, then carefully machining and polishing each piece to reveal its characteristic luster.
The Midnight Ocean takes full advantage of celluloid’s complex color mixing. Deep shades of blue flow irregularly through the cap and barrel, creating layers of color reminiscent of dark ocean water catching traces of light. Because the pattern comes from the material itself rather than a printed surface treatment, its swirls and variations give each pen its own individual character.
Finished with cool rhodium-toned details, the Midnight Ocean is fitted with Platinum’s large 14-karat gold nib with rhodium plating, complementing the deep blue celluloid from end to end. Its classic #3776 silhouette and richly patterned material make it a particularly distinctive interpretation of one of Platinum’s best-known fountain pen designs.
We have for sale a brand-new Platinum #3776 Century Celluloid Midnight Ocean with a 14-karat gold F nib. It comes complete with its box, papers, and other accessories.
