Platinum 3776 Century Celluloid Calico

Before modern acrylic resins became common in penmaking, celluloid was one of the materials most closely associated with fine fountain pens. Its vivid coloration and complex mixing allow patterns to appear with remarkable depth, but the same material is notoriously demanding to work with. Platinum is one of the few major Japanese manufacturers that continues to produce genuine celluloid fountain pens, preserving a craft that requires considerably more time and care than conventional resin production. 

Platinum’s own manufacturing process begins with sheets of celluloid that are cut, softened in hot water, formed into tubes, bonded, and then left to dry naturally. The components are shaped again and can spend as long as six months stabilizing before they are individually machined and carefully polished. Because heat can distort the material and variations occur from piece to piece, each component demands close attention throughout production. 

The Calico takes full advantage of celluloid’s visual character. Known in Platinum’s Japanese catalog as the “Ishigaki,” or stone-wall pattern, its irregular black and creamy pearl markings break across the cap, barrel, and grip like naturally formed fragments rather than a uniform printed design. Warm gold-toned trim and a large 14-karat gold nib complete the classic appearance, allowing the celluloid itself to remain the defining feature of the pen.
