Pilot introduced the Custom 742 in 1993 alongside the larger Custom 743, expanding upon the Custom 74 with larger gold nibs designed to provide a more stable writing feel. The 742 received Pilot’s No. 10 nib and has since developed into one of the most versatile models in the CUSTOM family, with an extensive selection of nib styles created for different handwriting preferences and purposes.
Among those options, the Music or MS nib is one of the most distinctive. Traditionally associated with writing musical notation, Pilot’s Music nib produces an especially broad line with noticeable variation between vertical and horizontal strokes. That difference also gives it an expressive character beyond sheet music, making it well suited for decorative lettering, bold handwriting, and calligraphy-style writing. Pilot recommends using the nib at a relatively upright writing angle to bring out its intended line character.
Finished in glossy black resin with warm gold-toned accents, the Custom 742 keeps its appearance restrained and traditional, allowing the unusual No. 10 Music nib to become the real focal point. It is a classic-looking Pilot with a writing experience that feels considerably more expressive than its understated exterior might suggest.
We have for sale a brand-new Pilot Custom 742 Black fountain pen with a 14-karat gold No. 10 MS nib. It comes complete with its box, papers, and other accessories.
