Pilot Custom 742 Black (M)

Pilot’s CUSTOM series grew from more than a century of Japanese fountain pen manufacturing, with the goal of giving writers a broad selection of nibs suited to different handwriting styles and preferences. In 1993, Pilot introduced the Custom 742 alongside the larger Custom 743, building upon the Custom 74 with larger No. 10 and No. 15 nibs designed to provide a more stable writing feel. 

The Custom 742 occupies an interesting middle ground in the series. Its No. 10 nib is noticeably larger than the No. 5 nib of the Custom 74, yet the pen retains comfortable proportions for everyday writing. Today, Pilot offers the 742 with one of the widest selections in the CUSTOM family, ranging from conventional points to specialty nibs designed for softer writing, signatures, calligraphic strokes, and different writing angles. 

This Black edition keeps the presentation unmistakably traditional, pairing a glossy black resin body with warm gold-toned accents. At the writing end is Pilot’s 14-karat No. 10 Medium nib, which Pilot categorizes as a firm medium point intended for letters and slightly larger handwriting.
