Rock gardens, or “karesansui,” are commonly known as “Zen gardens” due to their ties to Buddhist ideologies surrounding calmness, mindfulness, and discipline. Their creation is a ritual in itself, where each stone is positioned to represent nature’s elements and sand is raked to replicate water or empty space. These gardens are not meant to be walked in but to be visually experienced, allowing the viewer a wider perspective of what the landscape symbolizes and aiding them in self-reflection.
The artist collective Kokkokai replicates these beautifully arranged stones and sand on the Namiki Yukari Rock Garden fountain pen using Togidash-Hira Maki-e (Burnished Flat Maki-e) against a beautifully lacquered black background. The masterful application of gold powder gives the design an almost three-dimensional effect. It’s finished with a No. 10, 18-karat gold nib.
We have for sale a Namiki Yukari Rock Garden, complete with its box, papers, and other inclusions.
