If you’ve been following the Artemis II mission, then you’ve probably seen the beautiful shot of the Milky Way that the crew of Integrity took after their successful lunar fly-by. A spiral galaxy approximately 100,000 light-years wide, it is a beautiful expanse of stars, planets, and dust, where the Earth is but a speck around 26,000 light-years from its center. 

The Milky Way has long inspired many artists and has been interpreted in different ways. Artisans Michifumi, Misa, and Yutaka’s vision of this sea of stars is seen on the Namiki Yukari Milky Way, made using Raden or mother-of-pearl inlaying, and Togidashi Maki-e, a technique that utilizes Hira Maki-e (flat maki-e) layered with urushi, dried, then burnished with a special charcoal. This produces a beautiful, almost magical blend of gold and pearlescent sparkle, and a beautiful homage to the galaxy we all live in.
