Chinkin, which roughly translates to “sunken gold”, is a Japanese urushi technique that requires engraving a design on a pre-lacquered surface later inlaid with gold leaf or powder, creating vivid and intricate images that look almost three-dimensional. This was used by the artisans of the Kokkokai collective to create the Namiki Yukari Chinkin Sakura fountain pen, a flat-ended instrument that features golden cherry blossoms against a beautifully polished black background. It has a gold-colored clip engraved with “Namiki”, and a No. 10, 18-karat gold nib.
