Taira no Kagekiyo is probably one of the most famous historical samurai who still inspires characters in modern media. A prominent warrior from the Taira clan, he fought against the Minamoto clan during the Genpei War (1180) and later on had Minamoto no Yoritomo assassinated. He is depicted in the fictional recounting of the war called Heike Monogatari (The Tale of Heike) written some time in 1240, and has been the inspiration for many artists across centuries.
Aside from being recently released as a video game character, this legendary samurai is also featured on the Namiki Ukiyo-e Taira no Kagekiyo fountain pen as interpreted by the artists of Kokkokai. Using Hira Maki-e, Taira no Kagekiyo is shown wearing intricate armor, and this level of detail is balanced by small squares of gold on the cap. The pen carries a No. 5, 14-karat gold nib.
