“They say that a man capable of great evil is also capable of much good.” - Shobei Odera 🏯🌸
Kabuki, the 400-year-old classical Japanese theatrical art form, features historical events, light-hearted comedies, and tragic love stories. One of the latter is ”The Love Story of Izayoi and Seishin”, which tells of a monk and a courtesan whose relationship triggers a series of unfortunate coincidences leading to death. One of the characters who sees the end of the play is Hakuren, a poet who is also known as Shobei Odera, a master thief later revealed to be the monk’s long-lost brother.
The complex character of Shobei Odera is highlighted on the Namiki Ukiyo-e Shobei Odera, which features the interpretation of the artist collective Kokkokai.
