Namiki Chinkin Silver Grass

Silver grass (susuki/obana) is one of Japan’s traditional Seven Flowers of Autumn (Aki no Nanakusa). It is often painted against an autumn moon, as it is an indispensable offering during the moon-viewing festival called Tsukimi. It symbolizes the hope of a good harvest and protection against evil spirits. 

Stalks of silver grass are featured on the Namiki Chinkin Silver Grass, created by the artisan collective Kokkokai using the Chinkin technique, wherein the design is carved onto a lacquered surface, then inlaid with gold leaf and powder to produce an intricate visual texture.
