William Tell was a 14th-century Swiss figure who, despite the ongoing debate about his actual existence, was said to be a legendary rebel who fought for independence against the tyrannical Governor Gessler of the Habsburg Empire. Refusing to bow to the governor’s cap hanging from a pole as a sign of submission, he was seized by Gessler, who told him that if he could shoot the apple from the top of his son’s head, he would be spared death. Tell succeeded, and this remains one of the most famous scenes in literature.
Inspired by this legend, German writer Friedrich Schiller created the play “William Tell”, which was first performed in 1804 and was received with much enthusiasm, especially during a time of political upheaval in Europe. Independence and justice were timeless themes that resonated throughout and across nations, so much so that even Jose Rizal translated the play to Tagalog in 1886.
In honor of the playwright’s contribution to German romanticism, Montblanc released the Writers Edition Friedrich Schiller in 2000. We have a pre-owned unit for sale, with no box or papers.
