“When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin.” This is the first sentence of “The Metamorphosis”, one of the most famous works of Frank Kafka, who is known for his works revolving around isolation, unwanted confinement, and existential dread. In his book, Gregor represents the degradation of society’s scorned and how their abandonment brings “relief” to some.
Kafka did not receive accolades while he was still alive, as his dark, often disturbing works received mixed reactions and were relegated to small, avant-garde circles, but he achieved global recognition after his death, creating the term “Kafkaesque” to describe dehumanization, especially in totalitarian societies.
To celebrate his craft, Montblanc released the Writers Edition Frank Kafka (2004), inspired by “The Metamorphosis”. Similar to a bug’s shiny shell, the pen features very dark red—almost black—semi-translucent resin used to create a body that starts cornered, then turns cylindrical as a nod to Gregor’s transformation. The red represents Gregor’s injuries, while engraved on the 18-karat, rhodium-plated gold nib is his vermin form. Trims are made from sterling silver.
