A popular American socialite and one of the most influential art collectors of the 20th century, Peggy Guggenheim moved to Europe after inheriting her fortune, acquiring masterpieces, and building museums. One of, and probably the most famous and culturally significant museum she founded, was the Peggy Guggenheim Collection located in Venice, Italy. She began opening her collection to the public seasonally in 1951, showcasing both European surrealists (some of whom had been exiled during the war) and American modernists whom she met during her return to the U.S. in the 1940s. When Peggy Guggenheim died in 1979, the collection passed to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. which now manages the museum and keeps it open to the public all year round.
In honor of the collector who brought many artists, including Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, to the limelight, Montblanc released the Patron of Art Homage to Peggy Guggenheim 4810 fountain pen. Inspired by the kind of art she collected, it features an Art Deco-inspired look with black modernist lines on its ruthenium-coated body and cap. The barrel end is designed with a red spiral reminiscent of striped Venice pillars. The cap ring is decorated with lion heads inspired by Peggy Guggenheim's former home, the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. Engraved on the dog paws for the 14 Lhasa Apso dogs she loved throughout her life. It has platinum-plated fittings and carries an 18-karat gold nib.
