Montblanc Patron of Art Julius II

Many would agree that Pope Julius II was a controversial pope, and much more a conquering king than the Vicar of Christ. Driven to retrieve the large portions of the Papal States that fell under the once ecclesiastically and politically prominitent Borgia family, he subjugated Perugia and Bologna. He formed alliances with kings and emperors to take the once independent Republic of Venice. 

Julius II was not as spiritual as his office required, but he was a generous patron of the arts, who commissioned Michelangelo’s painting of the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling and Raphael’s famous frescoes. He was also known for founding the Vatican Museum and commissioning Bramante to build a new basilica of St. Peter, which still stands today. 

In celebration of the timeless art he pushed to be created, Montblanc released the Patron of Art Pope Julius II fountain pen (2005). It features a cream-colored body and cap overlaid with gold-plated latticework, which were inspired by papal clothing of the era. The finial design was taken from the Papal Tiara, an ostentatious headpiece worn by pontiffs from the 8th to the mid-20th century, which was retired in 1964 by Paul VI as a renunciation of human glory.
