While often cited as a great love story, Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare is an even greater tragedy, wherein the violence between two families—in addition to a forced marriage and the impulsiveness of young love—caused the relationship, marriage, and death of two teenagers in less than a week. It’s a cautionary tale disguised as romance that highlights how freedoms can be curtailed by hatred and how remorse can come too late.
The Montblanc 145 Doué Juliet is inspired by the tragic character and the play’s famous balcony scene in which Romeo sneaks into the Capulets’ backyard and finds Juliet looking out of her balcony. Not knowing that the young man was close, Juliet sighs, “Ay, me!” and an enamored Romeo says, “She speaks! O, speak again, bright angel!”
The pen’s ivory-colored body is inspired by how Romeo sees Juliet as a heavenly being, with the cap designed with a pattern mimicking an angel’s wings. The trims are gold-plated, with the piston knob etched with thorns that symbolize the hostility around the couple’s lives. The nib is made of Au 750 gold and is etched with a knife piercing a heart bearing Juliet’s name, representing the story’s tragic ending.
