montblanc-patron-of-art-moctezuma
Montblanc Patron of Art Moctezuma

The second Aztec emperor and the fifth Tenochtitlan king, Moctezuma, lived from 1398 to 1469 and was known for expanding and consolidating the empire. He built alliances with major city-states Texcoco and Tlacopan, and was known for constructing aqueducts that supplied fresh water to his constituents. He was succeeded by his daughter Atotoztli, who was said to have served as tlatoani (sovereign) herself.

Inspired by Moctezuma’s history of innovation, trade, and conquest, Montblanc released the Patron of Art Homage to Moctezuma I, one of the brand’s most interestingly designed pens. The cap takes its shape from the atlatl, a tool that provided better aim and velocity to spears. Its pattern and teal color are taken from Moctezuma’s cloak, while the hieroglyphs are the years that he reigned (1440 to 1469).

The pen’s barrel, on the other hand, is a stark contrast in carmine red, which is also a color found in the emperor’s cloak. The cone ends in hammered gold represent the sacrificial knife used to please the gods, while the 18-karat gold nib is engraved with the symbol for the city of Tenochtitlan, which is a cactus alongside two scrolls and the royal jewel.

We have for sale a brand-new Montblanc Patron of Art Homage to Moctezuma I released in 2020. It comes complete with its box, papers, and all its inclusions.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0717/4547/0720/files/1_ccaad0a1-c347-442e-ac6b-cdbf7ffcf7f7.png?v=1786780606
